Cupping therapy (Hijama) is a method of blood drawing from the small incisions made on the skin with vacuum cups. Cupping therapy is different from intravenous blood-drawing methods. It is based on the principle of discharging blood stasis containing toxic substances accumulated within the ligament (fibrous) tissue. Therefore, it has different effects than intravenous blood-drawing methods because of the characteristic of the application area.

The best cupping is the cupping performed before getting ill.

If the person is going to have cupping for the first time, it is not carried out immediately after the bath, it should be waited for two hours. Upon doctor’s advice, cupping can be performed immediately after the bath in those with intense blood.

In two areas, nape and fontanel, cupping should not be performed. If performed, it may cause amnesia.

Cupping should not be frequently performed behind the head, under the nape (neck) and behind the ears. It may cause the eyesight to weaken. In such a case, cupping can initially be performed 2-3 times at 2 weeks intervals, then once a month.

After cupping is over, it is necessary not to touch the cuts and not to wipe off the blood. However, it is possible to bandage the wound with a dry cloth after the blood has stopped and the crusts have formed on the cuts.

Moreover, the crusts formed on the cuts should not be wiped off and it should not be taken bath within the next 24 hours in order to avoid infection. 1 – 2 hours after cupping, nothing should be eaten and it should not be slept.

There is no statement about the day in the Sayings of Prophet Muhammad who advised to have cupping.

In some sources, it is advised to be performed on the days 15-17-19-21-23 according to the hegira calendar when the lunar gravity is maximum, in some sources, it is advised to be performed on the days 17-19-21, however, there is no evidence-based and scientific information on why this is so.

In healthy people or in people with disease or with any sign of disease, cupping can always be performed under the supervision of a doctor. After being recommended by a physician, the day and time are not important.

Regarding this issue Semure b. Cundeb (r.a) said: I was with the Prophet Aleyhisselam. He called a cupping therapy practitioner and wanted him to take blood. The practitioner prepared horns and scalpels, and punctured the area where the blood was to be taken with the sharp end of scalpel. Then the blood began to flow into a container (bottle). In the meantime, one of the sons of Feraze came: “Resulallah! What is this? Why are you making your body cut with this? asked. Prophet Aleyhisselam said: “This is getting blood drawn.” This time, the man asked again: What is getting blood drawn?. Prophet Aleyhisselam said: “Getting blood drawn is one of the best healing type with which people are treated.”

Again, the Prophet Aleyhisselam said by praising a cupping practioner in a saying: “What a beautiful person is the one who takes blood from the body (cupping practioner). Because he removes dirty blood, alleviates the back and strengthens the eyesight. ”

“Resulullah Aleyhissalatu Vesselam said:” Three things are cure: honey syrup, getting blood drawn (hijamat), cauterization with fire. However, I prohibit my ummah from cauterization. ”

According to another said, “Honey and cupping are curative.” (Bukhari, Tıbb 3.) “During miraj (ascent to heaven) I have not encountered an angel that did not told me that Muhammad, advise your ummah to have cupping. There is a cure in cupping.” “The best thing is the cupping among your treatments.” What a good human being is the one who performs cupping. It removes excess blood, alleviates the back, brightens up the eye.” The Prophet himself received cupping therapy from a practitioner by the name of Ebu Taybe and had blood drawn from his head. Our master’s wives also had cupping. The opinion arguing that women do not need for cupping because of menstruation is wrong. Menstruation does not provide healing, they need cupping for healing.

Hz. Enes (R.A) tells: “Resulullah Sallallahu alayhi vesellem said:” Every congregation I met during miraj told me, “Muhammad! Order your ummah to have cupping! ”
